Albuquerque Cancels Arena Plan

The mayor of Albuquerque, N.M., canceled a $5 million plan to add arena space with retractable seating to its convention center exhibit hall.

The original plan was to transform part of the convention center “into a 10,000 seat pavilion style arena” but a $30,000 study indicated the venue’s limited seating and low ceiling would make it difficult to draw an anchor tenant, according to KRQE.

Instead the city will put $1 million of the funds from lodgers’ taxes toward modernizing the exhibit hall and the rest will be used on renovating the Civic Plaza area downtown.
