Cash Influx In Flint

A foundation has given $15 million toward the renovation of Flint’s Capitol Theatre.

The gift announced this week by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation is for the Flint Cultural Center Foundation, a supporting organization of the Flint Cultural Center Corp.

The money will support efforts to restore and preserve the distinctive architecture of the theater while updating it with modern technology and amenities. It follows $5.5 million from the state through its Community Revitalization Program and a $4 million gift from the Hagerman Foundation.

Organizers say they hope to have the ornate, atmospheric theater, which opened in 1928, fully restored during a 14-16 month renovation project.

Design concepts are expected to be unveiled Thursday during a community event. A grand reopening is planned for late 2017 or early 2018.
