Digable Planets Orbiting North America

The group played at Pitchfork Music Festival last week and has been rambling around since with a pair of performances in Ohio, and shows in Asheville, N.C., and Birmingham, Ala., all in the books.

The next performance is tonight in Nashville and the last date North American date is scheduled for Portland’s Project Pabst @ Crystal Ballroom Aug. 25. Digable Planets also has a European tour scheduled for November.

The original lineup of Ladybug Mecca, Butterfly and Doodlebug is back together for the full tour after reuniting for a show in Seattle last year. Before that it was mostly the boys touring in the late 2000s, as the band broke up in 1995 after releasing two albums. There hasn’t been a proper album from the group until 1994’s Blowout Comb, although the compilation album Beyond The Spectrum – The Creamy Spy was released in 2005. 

Jazz-influenced hip hop with socially conscious and thoughtful lyrics was in style in the early ‘90s, and bands like De La Soul and Project Pabst @ Crystal Ballroom led the charge alongside Digable Planets. Many of those bands couldn’t keep up the momentum though and artsy rap ultimately moved “underground.”
