Spotlight On Sepultura’s ‘Roots’

Sepultura founding members Max and Iggor Cavalera are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Brazilian heavy metal band’s Roots LP by playing the album in its entirety throughout a fall North American tour.

The brothers formed Sepultura as teenagers in 1984 following the death of their father, with Igor on drums/percussion and Max playing lead guitar and singing backing vocals. Max switched to lead vocals, rhythm guitar, percussion and berimbau in 1985.

The acclaimed Roots marked Sepultura’s sixth studio album. The LP earned plenty of praise from the music press upon its 1996 release. Years later Pop Matters noted that it “not only combined metal with native Brazilian instrumentation … but proceeded to become a pivotal recording in the burgeoning nu-metal genre.”

Roots became especially significant to Sepultura fans because it was the last album to feature Max Cavalera. After he left the band in 1997, Derrick Green took over as lead vocalist. Igor Cavalera departed the lineup in 2006.

In 2007 the Cavalera brothers founded the band Cavalera Conspiracy. Max also plays in Soulfly and Killer Be Killed, while Igor’s resume also includes the DJ duo Mixhell.

The rest of the Cavalera Conspiracy lineup – guitarist Marc Rizzo and bassist Johny Chow – will help Max and Igor show off Roots on the “Return To Roots” tour. The outing begins Sept. 12 in Las Vegas and concludes with a performance in Sacramento at Monster Energy Aftershock Festival.

“Metalheads! It’s time,” Max Cavalera said. “20 years ago, we released the Roots album and changed the face of metal forever. Now, we’re returning to ‘the roots’ to show everybody the magic and inspiration of the Roots live experience! You cannot miss this Return To Roots 2016!”

Iggor added, “I am very proud to play Roots again, to reaffirm that after 20 years, it still moves people! We hit the stage again with Roots to destroy everywhere we pass by!”
