The announcement came through a tweet by Robbie Williams Aug. 11; further details were unavailable at press time.

“My Friend, Mentor and Hero passed away today. David Enthoven I love you RIP x” Williams tweeted.

Enthoven, through the London-based company he cofounded, ie:music, managed Williams since the singer’s exit from Take That in 1996 and stood by Williams through his struggle with addiction.

Enthoven, though, began his management career in 1969 alongside John Gradon with King Crimson and handled management duties for Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music as well. His management career went downhill in the 1980s because of a battle with drugs and alcohol but he returned to form in the 1990s.

He’s also credited with changing the name of Marc Bolan’s band to T. Rex because he couldn’t spell Tyrannosaurus. Enthoven’s management career ran concurrently with his career as a record company founder; the EG record label was associated with T. Rex, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Roxy Music.
