The act was formed in Melbourne, Australia, by Neil Finn with the late Paul Hester, drummer of his previous band Split Enz, and bassist Nick Seymour. The band also included Split Enz co-founder Tim Finn in the ranks for some years, as did Americans Mark Hart (guitar) and Matt Sherrod (drums).

The ARIA awards and the release of Crowded House’s debut album both mark their 30th anniversary.

The album, through Capitol, reached No. 2 in the US. The band went on to sell 2 million albums, fueled by a series of hits including “Don’t Dream It’s Over,” “Better Be Home Soon” and “Four Seasons in One Day.” Although Finn broke the band up in 1996 (their farewell at the Sydney Opera House that November drew 100,000), their songs lived on. A 2015 cover of “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande generated 40 million YouTube views.
