Spanish Promoter Sentenced In Stampede Deaths

The promoter behind a 2012 Steve Aoki concert in Spain where five people died in a crowd stampede was reportedly sentenced to four years in prison.

A court determined that Miguel Angel Flores had oversold a Halloween concert at Madrid Arena by 6,000 people, according to El Mundo, and other safety measures were not in place.

Of the other 14 defendants, seven were convicted of crimes including negligent homicide and manslaughter.

These defendants were mostly from security firms contracted for the show. Others including paramedics, security personnel and Madrid’s former police chief were acquitted.

Flores’ sentence of four years is the maximum for his charges. A flare erupted in a section of the oversold arena, starting a crowd crush that left five people dead. Part of Flores’ conviction forbids him from event production, but El Mundo reports that he intends to reopen his Madrid nightclub, Macumba, in October.
