Madison Square Garden Revamp?

Future plans to upgrade NYC’s Penn Station by 2020 may include renovating the  building that sits above the station.

Discussions about the Penn Station project over the years have included moving Madison Square Garden under Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plan. Three years ago the New York City Council extended the venue’s lease for 10 years, thinking it would eventually be razed and the stadium moved to a new site.

However, an earlier study speculated that moving MSG and its associated costs could run about $5 billion, according to Curbed New York.

But architect Vishaan Chakrabarti of Practice for Architecture and Urbanism has an alternative plan that would save the MSG building from extinction. Under the plan, the cylindrical MSG would be revamped into a transparent pavilion with its ceiling featuring a map of New York.

The projected cost to transform the MSG building and construct a new arena nearby would be $3 billion, Curbed New York said.
