Arena Employees File Suit

Five former and current employees of  in Portland, Maine, have filed a class action lawsuit against the Cumberland County Recreation District.
in Portland, Maine. Formerly the Cumberland County Civic Center, as pictured.

Spectra took over arena operations from the CCRD in March 2015. The Press Herald reported that CCRD sent a termination letter to employees stating that Spectra intended to offer them employment at the arena in the same positions and at the same rate of pay with similar benefits.

However, employees said that the new terms were “substantially inferior.” They were required to apply for new jobs and not all of them were rehired.

The new terms cut the number of paid holidays from 13 to eight, employees worked “more hours without additional compensation,” were not “allowed to take comp time for excess hours worked,” and were forced to pay more for health insurance, according to the Press Herald.

The plaintiffs’ attorney, Jeffrey Young, estimated he could end up representing 120 former and current employees, WCSH-TV reported.
