Kanye West’s Saint Pablo Tour Continues
When West announced the initial 2016 routing it came with a press release from promoter Live Nation that claimed the tour was “the most anticipated concert event of the year.” Looks like the rapper has lived up to expectations.
A review from the Twin Cities Pioneer Press’ Ross Raihala says, “Kanye West is a genius. And he’s the first person who’ll tell you that, one of the reasons he remains such a divisive, controversial figure. But Monday night at St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center, he turned the concept of an arena concert upside down and presented a show unlike anything ever seen on such a large scale. One could even call it, without a whiff of irony, performance art.”
The post ends by declaring, “In a year filled with some memorable large-scale concerts – from Metallica to Beyoncé – West just may have topped them all.”
Yeezus is accompanied on tour by a 20 x 16 foot platform stage that hovers over the crowd.
The Guardian’s Mike Doherty writes, “Saint Pablo’s imagery recalls his 2014 summer festival shows, which found a masked West alone in front of a giant, monolithic screen. This tour is equally dependent on him as a central, unsupported performer, but with its stage that can tilt, bump and dip down just above fans’ heads so they could nearly touch their idol when he lies down above them. It’s dynamic and compelling.”
