Faulty Zamboni Sets Off Alarms

A Canadian arena was evacuated when an ice-maintenance machine set off carbon monoxide detectors Oct. 16.

Emergency crews first arrived at MainWay Recreation Centre in Burlington, Ontario, to care for an injured athlete in the midst of a girls’ hockey game.

Once the crew was there, alarms sounded and hundreds on site were evacuated while the building was ventilated by a Hazmat team, according to AM 900. The levels of CO were at 109 parts per million, enough to cause headache after 1-2 hours of contact according to the Burlington Post.

Burlington Fire said the source of the gas was “determined to be from a faulty Zamboni … The Zamboni was taken out of service and the building was returned to use once CO levels had returned to zero.”
