Minnesota Promoters Salvage Prince Tribute

With headliners pulling out and the host venue not locked in just a month out from the show, the Oct. 13 tribute to Prince in St. Paul had the makings of a disaster, but experienced promoters came onboard in crunch time to save the project.

Days after Prince’s death, longtime collaborator Sheila E proclaimed she would help put on a concert to honor him in the recently opened . Prince’s estate announced the gig in July through his sister, Tyka Nelson, but as the performance drew closer, many pieces were not in place. L. Londell McMillan, a lawyer/publisher charged with finding financial and organizational support for the event, turned to Irving Azoff, who recommended longtime Minnesota promoter Rand Levy of Rose Presents for the job.

“It’s more work than I care to do, with so many moving parts,” Levy told the Star Tribune. “But, in the end, we [were] able to fulfill this more as a tribute – Prince songs interpreted by great singers.” Some of the key moves Levy made were switching the venue to the more manageable Xcel Energy Center (18,500 capacity) and shipping in top-notch sound, light and video techs, along with promoting and financing the whole shebang.

The night was ultimately a success, with a sellout crowd and performances from Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Tori Kelly, Doug E. Fresh, Morris Day & The Time, and Mint Condition, along with Prince’s former spouse Mayte Garcia.

The event also featured a recorded message from President Barack Obama. John Mayer canceled his set during the show some weeks in advance due to a scheduling conflict.

Christina Aguilera bailed at the last minute citing a health issue. Anita Baker also reportedly withdrew at the last minute. Sheila E ended up being unavailable to perform, also because of a scheduling conflict. Levy was out of the country at press time and unavailable for further comment.
