The university’s Board of Regents approved the purchase of 38 acres for the stadium and adjacent parking lot. The $26 million conversion, which includes new locker rooms and football offices, will have the option to add another 10,000 seats in the future.

The university will take control of the property Jan. 1. Turner Field originally opened as Centennial Olympic Stadium with seating for about 83,000. It was a centerpiece of host city Atlanta’s 1996 Summer Olympic Games.
