Hawks Building Nest For D-League Team

The Atlanta Hawks announced Nov. 10 that the franchise has been awarded an NBA Development League team and a new 3,500-capacity arena will be built for the up-and-comers. 

The team announced the new arena, which will be constructed in partnership with the city of College Park, will be a part of the Georgia International Conve The new arena is expected to be open by the 2019-20 season, and is expected to be used for concerts and other events.

The Hawks also reached an agreement to make $193 million in renovations to Philips Arena. The city of Atlanta is putting forth the lion’s share of those expenses and could now keep the team for the next 30 years.

There is a bit of a musical-chairs game going on between stadiums in Atlanta, as Georgia State University recently received approval to purchase the 45,000-capacity , the longtime home of the Braves, whose new SunTrust Park is opening next season.
