Val Air Ballroom On The Block

The owners of an Iowa venue are putting it on the market, although it is still hosting events. 

The 2,556-capacity Val Air Ballroom in West Des Moines is being shopped by owner Pedro Zamora, who operates out of Detroit. The venue opened in 1939. The Neighborhood Development Corp., a nonprofit that evaluated the building, said the Val Air is due for a bunch of renovations, and estimated the necessary repairs to reach $1.1 million.

That figure could shrink if the government designates the ballroom as a cultural landmark.

“We’re not desperate,” Zamora told the Des Moines Register. “If something comes up, great. If not, we’ll keep operating it the way it is.”

This year the venue has hosted Ted Nugent, Tech N9ne, and Val Air Ballroom, as well as boxing and mixed martial arts events. The reported asking price is $2.6 million.
