James McMurtry Revs Up Regional Run

After spending some time overseas, James McMurtry has a few shows lined up in his home state of Texas and a run of dates along the East Coast.

McMurtry’s Americana twangs will first ring out in the Lone Star state, in Denton, Texas, on March 3 specifically. There are two more Texas shows in Helotes and Houston on March 4 and 11.

The regional run starts in Winston-Salem, N.C., at the Millennium Center on March 24, and there are shows around the coast for two weeks, wrapping in Fall River, Mass., on April 7.

His March 28 gig in Alexandria, Va., is with Tift Merrit. The Austin resident also has one more Texas gig planned in Texarkana on April 9.

James McMurtry has been identified as a political songwriter, and he offered the single “Remembrance” on election day. Most of the tunes he plays in the live show are from his recent album Complicated Game, which is full of character-driven stories in song form.

Jason Isbell has said of the singer/songwriter: “James McMurtry is one of my very few favorite songwriters on Earth and these days he’s working at the top of his game. … He has that rare gift of being able to make a listener laugh out loud at one line and choke up at the next. I don’t think anybody writes better lyrics.”
