X was founded in the fall of 1976 when guitarist Billy Zoom saw The Ramones and put an ad in the classifieds to try to form a band, and connected with bassist John Doe. 40 years later the band is still playing with its original membership of Doe, Zoom, founding drummer DJ Bonebreak and vocalist Exene Cervenka.
“For a long time interviewers and X people we’ve met have asked us, ‘Did you think when X started you’d still be playing together now?’ And our answer is surprisingly, ‘No! Of course not!’ In 1976 I was 20; now I’m 60. How’s that for weird?” Cervenka said in a press release.
The band’s sound has evolved over the last 40 years, but the foundation is the power-chord driven style and the vocals of Cervenka, one of early punk’s most notable female voices.
