The next gig for FJM is at Humphrey’s Concerts By The Bay in San Diego, Calif., April 12. Then he performs at Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, followed by North America headline dates throughout May. The singer-songwriter also has a show in Mexico City June 7.
Most of FJM’s June is spent in Europe, with appearances planned at Piknik I Parken in Norway and Roskilde Festival in Denmark. There is currently only one Australian date booked for the artist, a play at Splendour In The Grass July 21.
Father John returns to North America for Osheaga Festival in Montreal Aug. 5 and mixes festivals and headline gigs on the continent until Nov. 11. The last run currently on the books for the former Pollstar HotStar is in Europe, wrapping with a show at Coliseu Dos Recreios in Lisbon, Portugal, Nov. 20.
Pure Comedy came out today and the reviews have been overall positive.
“Pure Comedy, his third album, makes it clear that the 35-year-old’s commitment to provocation is stronger than ever. At times he strips back the record’s gorgeous orchestral instrumentation—courtesy of acclaimed composers Gavin Bryars and Nico Muhly—to reveal little more than a piano or an acoustic guitar, forcing listeners to consider his satire about, say, the dying man who checks his newsfeed one last time, or the ideological prisons that both liberals and conservatives have built around themselves, or the “radiant blandness” of streaming-service algorithms,” Pitchfork writes.
Here’s a tune off the album performed on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”:
The artist is known for saying and doing outrageous things, to a degree that would be difficult to summarize quickly. He said in a New York Times interview that he has been diagnosed with PTSD by three different therapists, but refuses anti-depressants, preferring instead micro-doses of LSD.
