Belly Up For A New Venue

Officials with the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Southern California are advocating to build a 1,900-capacity, $19 million concert venue at the location’s Surfside Race Place.

The 26-year-old facility is used for off-track betting but isn’t quite the draw it once was.

What’s good news for talent buyers is that it will give the area a larger concert option, according to the San Diego Reader.

Belly Up Tavern’s Chris Goldsmith, Pete McDevitt and Chad Waldorf are a few of those buyers who have been involved with booking the Coors Light Rock On Stage at the Del Mar Fair for five years and most recently, the Four O’Clock Fridays series at the race track that kicks off in July.

Live Nation and AEG/Goldenvoice have a prominent presence in the region as well.

Fairgrounds spokeswoman Shawn Feist told the Reader once the funds are obtained, construction would begin with a tentative opening in late 2018.
