Jerry Perenchio Dies

Jerry Perenchio, 86, former agent, Univision owner and promoter, died of lung cancer at his Bel Air, Calif., home May 23.

In the 1950s, Perenchio worked as a talent agent at Music Corp. of America run by Lew Wasserman before starting his own agency. Perenchio Artists had a roster including Andy Williams, Glen Campbell, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mathis, Sergio Mendes and The Kingston Trio.

As a sports promoter he helped orchestrate the 1971 “Fight of the Century” between Joe Frazier and Muhammed Ali at Madison Square Garden and the 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs.

Perenchio and two media tycoons bought Univision in 1992 when it was a struggling Spanish-language network. Perenchio, as chairman and CEO, remained with the company until it was sold in 2006.
