Philips Arena Renovation

The $193 million renovation of the Philips Arena, home of the NBA’s Hawks, began a day after the Atlanta City Council approved funding.

The bulk of the money, about $110 million, will be generated from a car rental tax collected at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, according to the Associated Press.

Another $32.5 million will come from the sale of Turner field, former home of the MLB’s Braves, to Georgia State University. The Hawks will commit $50 million to the renovations.

The team’s lease will extend to 2048. The renovations are scheduled to be completed by the 2018-2019 season.
