The album, which promises to “vibrate the soul with an energy rarely found these days,” features bassist Glen Hughes of Deep Purple and Black Country Communion and drummer Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Smith and Satriani previously joined forces as members of Chickenfoot. The album also unites Satriani once again with producer/engineer/mixer Mike Fraser, who has worked with the guitarist since 1998’s Crystal Planet.
The tour launches the day before the album’s release with a gig at Seattle’s Moore Theatre. The G3 road trip is headed to more than two dozen cities in January and February including Reno, Los Angeles, Denver, Orlando, Boston, New York, Toronto, Chicago and Milwaukee.
“I could say that I’m surprised at the durability of G3 and how much it’s grown, but in a way I’m not,” Satriani said. “I think part of its charm and its mojo is in the chemistry of having three top guitarists share what they do on stage. It’s fun, it’s unpredictable, it’s wild – it’s everything you could want in a show.”
In other news, the tour documentary “Beyond the Supernova” will make its debut at the Mill Valley Film Festival in October. Directed by Satriani’s son, ZZ, the film features footage of the rocker and his band on their last “Shockwave Supernova” tour through Europe and Asia.
Plus, Satriani’s “Strange Beautiful Music: A Musical Memoir” will be released in paperback on Nov. 7. The memoir, first released in 2014, will include a new chapter on Satriani’s 2015 album, Shockwave Supernova.
Fans who pre-order What Happens Next will get first access to presale tickets for the G3 tour. The presale starts Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. local time. General onsales start Sept. 22. Select dates go on sale Oct. 6. Check with your local venue for more information.
