University officials are going forward with their plan to upgrade the 11,000-capacity basketball arena, opened in 1963, as plans for an adjoining convention center project are also in the works.
ISU President Dan Bradley told the Tribune-Star renovations needed to go forward instead of waiting for funding to be secured for the convention center.
The $37.5 million in requested state funding is part of a planned $75 million for a new convention center and Hulman Center renovations.
Vigo County Capital Improvements Board officials are said to back the university’s decision to move forward and will send the state a letter supporting the move.
The Hulman Center project is estimated to cost about $50 million.
