Dua Lipa Leads Brits Nominations

Dua Lipa is the first female artist to secure five Brits nominations in one year, including for the coveted Best Album award.
Dua Lipa is also nominated as Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act as well as in the Singles and Video of the Year categories, both for “New Rules,” the most streamed song by a female in the UK in 2017.
Ed Sheeran is close on her heels, though, with four nominations in total: Male Solo Artist, Album (Divide), Single and Video of the Year (“Shape Of You”). It is also suspected that Sheeran may even catch up with Dua Lipa, should he turn out to win this year’s Global Success award, which is given to British artists that have enjoyed worldwide success.
J Hus (British Breakthrough, Album, Single) and Rag N Bone Man (Male Solo, Album, Single) secured three nominations each, the full list can be found below. Fans vote two categories – Video of the Year and British Breakthrough via – while the rest is decided by a voting academy consisting of some 1,000 individuals from all sectors of the music industry. Dave, Loyle Carner and Sampha join Dua Lipa and J Hus in the British Breakthrough category.
Two awards have already been bestowed: Steve Mac has been revealed as British Producer of the Year. Jorja Smith won the Critics’ Choice award, following in the steps of Adele or Florence + the Machine, who won the award in the past. Smith performed her current single Let Me Down live on TV, Jan. 13, when the nominations were revealed. The song features Stormzy, who is also nominated as Male Solo artist.
The Brits 2018 will go down at London’s O2 arena on Feb. 21. Most of the live performances will come from nominees, including Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Stormzy and Foo Fighters, who have a shot at the International Group award alongside Arcade Fire, Haim, The Killers and LCD Soundsystem. Sam Smith is going to perform as well, but isn’t nominated, despite his current album The Thrill Of It All being the third-biggest seller in the UK in 2017.
