Fredo Santana, a star of Chicago’s “drill”-style of hip-hop music died in Los Angeles Jan. 19 for health reasons that hadn’t been specified at press time. He was 27.

Santana released his first mixtape in 2012 and our tour records for him indicate he was a steady presence on the road since. He collaborated with the likes of Chief Keef, Drake, and Juelz Santana
The death was confirmed by Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner, and an outpouring of support, specifically from rappers, followed the news on social media.
Chief Keef wrote Jan. 20, “Stop saying Fredo was my friend, That’s my cousin, Big difference.” Santana’s father wrote “Derrick [Santana was born Derrick Coleman] was my second born named after my mentor my oldest brother, this is truly coming from my heart for I’m a loss for words.”

Fredo struggled publicly with an addiction to lean, a popular combination of promethazine with codeine and soda, and shared on Instagram in October that he had been hospitalized with liver and kidney failure.
