Former The Temptations singer Dennis Edwards died Friday, just one day before what would have been his 75th birthday.

Edwards’ death in Chicago was confirmed by his family, according to CBS News.

He joined the legendary group in the 1968 and earned Grammys for his work on “Cloud Nine” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.” The Temptations were inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame in 1989.

Edwards hadn’t performed with the official The Temptations band in years after a naming dispute with Otis Williams, but was featured in The Temptations Revue featuring Dennis Edwards and as a solo artist.

Edwards is survived by his daughter Issa Pointer, from his former marriage to Ruth Pointer of the Pointer Sisters.
