Leaving a band to launch a solo career is always a major undertaking and Ms. Hill hit it out of the ballpark with her 1998 release.  The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill was all over radio, crossing formats with tracks receiving heavy airplay on rock radio stations as well as on Top 40, Urban and R&B.

The 20th anniversary tour begins July 5 on the East Coast at Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater in Virginia Beach, Va.  Mixing sheds with indoor venues, the tour will stop at such places as PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, N.J.; Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif.; Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Denver and Lakefront Arena in New Orleans.

“This album chronicled an intimate piece of my young existence,” Ms. Hill said in a statement.  “It was the summation of most, if not all, of my most hopeful and positive emotions experienced to that date.  I loved and believed deeply in my community’s ability to both love and heal itself provided it received the right amount of support and encouragement.  Our world today, both complex and changing, is in need of the balance between moral fortitude and cathartic expression.  I hope the love and energy that permeated this work can continue to inspire change with love and optimism at the helm.”

A portion of each ticket sold will go to Ms. Hill’s MLH Foundation, which in turn will help out several charities, including the Colorado Coalition for Genocide Awareness and Action, Haiti Cultural Exchange, Black Parents Workshop, Appetite For Change and Urban Underground.

Boxoffice data submitted to Pollstar during the past two years shows a variety of results.  Hill’s September performance at Austin360 Amphitheater in Austin, Texas, which included Chronixx and NAS on the bill, sold 6,175 tickets out of 12,571 available and grossed $238,108.  The same lineup played Bayfront Park Amphitheater in Miami and sold 7,103 out of 8,500 tickets and grossed $331,320.

Citi is the tour’s official credit card and it is running a presale now through April 19 at 10 p.m. local time.  General onsales, including VIP experiences, begin April 20.  Keep an eye on Pollstar’s Ms. Lauryn Hill page for updates.
