Seattle’s Showbox Threatened By Developer Plans

Performers including Mike McCready, Nancy Wilson, Duff McKagan, Mike Ness and Chad Smith gather for the MusiCares Concert for Recovery at the Showbox in Seattle May 10.

Fans and artists have come together voicing support for legendary Seattle club The Showbox, which is in threat of being torn down after a developer reportedly filed plans to replace the 79-year-old building with a high-rise tower holding more than 440 units.

The 1,130-capacity club has shows almost every night, with upcoming dates with everyone from E40 to Andrew W.K. to three nights with hometown favorites Minus The Bear for their farewell tour. Pollstar recently spoke with Minus The Bear Guitarist Dave Knduson, who mentioned the Showbox and AEG Presents talent buyer Chad Queirolo as favorites of the band.

The venue has hosted legendary artists over its storied history, with everyone from Muddy Waters to Pearl Jam gracing its stage, as well as Iggy Pop, Billy Idol, Lady Gaga, Paul Simon, Snoop Dogg and so many more. 
Pollstar has reached out to Queirolo for comment, who said he is floored by the public support for the building.
 
Recent boxoffice reports submitted from the Showbox include Joey Bada$$ May 13, who sold out 1,130 tickets and grossed $30,046, Architects who moved 940 tickets and grossed $21,932 March 2, and Wyclef Jean on April 21, who sold 714 tickets and grossed $24,187.
