Emma Banks Receives Music Industry Trusts Award 2018
John Marshall (JM Enternational) – Congratulations Emma Banks
Peter Mensch and Chad Smith presented Banks
Emma Banks became the first booking agent to receive a prestigious Music Industry Trust Award in London, Nov. 5. Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and manager Peter Mensch made a surprise appearance to present their long-time business partner and friend with the trophy.
In her acceptance speech, Banks reflected upon her career, which began at Wasted Talent in 1990 and led her to lead CAA’s London office alongside her long-time colleague Mike Greek.
Banks joked that Greek had become the closest person to a husband she had ever met, and thanked his wife for sharing him with her.
She said it was incredible to have spent a life traveling the world alongside some of the greatest bands – which currently include Arcade Fire, Hozier, Tenacious D, Haim, Katy Perry, Paramore, Muse, Kraftwerk, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, RHCP, Norah Jones and more – and now receive an award for it.
Banks is also the first female executive to win a MITS award, joining artists Annie Lennox and Kylie Minogue, who is also a client of Banks’. As are or were Florence + the Machine, Beth Ditto and Texas, who all performed live during the evening.
John Marshall (JM Enternational) – Sharleen Spiteri of Texas
One of the many great artists, who have a history with Emma Banks
Florence had “left most of the machine at home,” as the night’s host Alice Levine remarked, and performed alongside one of her band members strumming the harp. Beth Ditto had only her bassist and a tambourine to accompany her.
Texas performed in full and closed the night at London’s swanky Grosvenor House Hotel. Most of the above mentioned artists also appeared in a tribute film dedicated to Banks.
Emma follows last year’s honouree Rob Stringer. Previous recipients in the award’s 27-year history include Sir Lucian Grainge, Ahmet Ertegun, Simon Cowell and Michael Eavis CBE.
The seven-time Pollstar UK Agent of the Year Award recipient adds to her trophy cabinet, which also includes Music Week’s Outstanding Contribution award, two UK Woman of the Year Awards for the Music Industry and the Outstanding Contribution Award of the UK Women In Music Awards.
Bobby Gillespie, Adrienne Warren, Apl De Ap and Taboo, Nadine Shah, Naughty Boy, Emma Hatton, Sharleen Spiteri, Mary Portas and The Script were among last night’s attendees, as were many of the UK’s leading figures in live entertainment.
A lot of them could be seen overbidding each other on various items, memorabilia and travel packages that were auctioned off to support the two charities that are supported by the MITS Award: the BRIT Trust and Nordoff Robbins.
The award is sponsored by Ingenious, PPL, SJM and Spotify.
