Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio announced the creation of a new band — and a tour to go along with it — on Tuesday. Ghosts of the Forest consists of Phish drummer Jon Fishman, Trey Anastasio Band bassist Tony Markellis, keyboardist Ray Paczkowski and vocalists Jennifer Hartswick and Celisse Henderson.
They’ll hit the road next spring for a seven-date tour kicking off at Portland, Maine’s State Theatre on April 4 and concluding with two nights at New York’s United Palace Theatre on April 12 and 13.
Phish remains Anastasio’s marquee touring act — highlighted by a 13-night July 2017 run at Madison Square Garden that grossed $15.04 million — and will cap a busy 2018 with four nights at Madison Square Garden to ring in the new year.
But Anastasio draws significantly on his own, and has stayed on the road apart from his main gig. After a successful February solo acoustic tour that routed him through theaters, Anastasio is currently on a second such jaunt. He also toured as Trey Anastasio Trio in April with Markellis and drummer Russ Lawton, including two sold-out shows at the Chicago Theatre that grossed $336,636.
Anastasio was also an integral part of the Grateful Dead’s 2015 shows, handling the late Jerry Garcia’s guitar parts; despite only consisting of five gigs, the tour was the year’s 26th most lucrative, grossing $52.2 million.
Anastasio’s life as a road warrior may have cut into his studio time: He released eight studio albums between 2002 and 2015, but hasn’t released another since that year’s Paper Wheels.
