Alabama announced Monday that they’ll hit the road in 2019 for a 50th anniversary tour. The seminal country group shared 27 dates for the next year, and promised to announce more bookings in the coming weeks and months.
Though Alabama released their debut album in 1976, the tour harkens back to their formation in 1969. The band formed, naturally, in Alabama that year, and relocated to South Carolina in the early ’70s.
“We never thought playing for tips at The Bowery in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, that 50 years later we would still playing arenas, stadiums and festivals,” frontman Randy Owen said in a statement. “Teddy, Jeff and I are humbled at the amount of fans that are coming out to see us. We are finding out that we are playing to three generations of fans who have followed us and our music from day one. The fans are the ones responsible for our continued success on the road and we love them.”
Guitarist Jeff Cook said the tour “will be full of surprises and great memories,” and bassist Teddy Gentry assured that “each show will be a night to remember for us.”
For now, the tour kicks off Jan. 10 at Detroit’s Fox Theatre and concludes Sept. 14 at the Tailgate N’ Tallboys festival in Peoria, Illinois. In the intervening months, Alabama will hit major cities including New Orleans, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh while visiting smaller metropolitan areas in Kansas, Arkansas and more.
A diverse slate of openers for the 50th anniversary tour includes Chris Janson, the Charlie Daniels Band, the Marshall Tucker Band, Tracy Lawrence, Exile, the Oak Ridge Boys and Restless Heart.
Alabama stands as one of the most commercially successful groups of all-time, selling 46.5 million certified units, according to the RIAA. Fifteen of their studio albums have gone platinum, with several going multi-platinum. They’ve accumulated 15 American of Country Music awards, 18 American Music Awards and two Grammys.
And they remain a significant box office draw. In 2018, Alabama grossed $8.7 million, placing them on Pollstar‘s Year End Top 200 North American Tours chart. That included a three-night stand at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, with the Charlie Daniels Band providing support, that sold 13,081 tickets for a gross of $991,925.
