Khalid announced Tuesday that he will headline “A Night For Suncity,” a benefit concert Sept. 1 at Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. The show follows the Aug. 3 mass shooting in the city that left at least 22 dead.
“I have been rocked to the core by the horrific act of gun violence that came to El Paso, and by the continued acts of senseless violence that our country faces daily,” the 21-year-old musician shared in a statement. “I want to give back to my community of El Paso, the city of the 915, who has given so much to me. Please come out and let’s heal together through music while raising money to help those who need it.”
Proceeds from the concert will benefit the El Paso Shooting Victims’ Fund and the El Paso Community Foundation. The Great Khalid Foundation and manager Courtney Stewart’s Right Hand Foundation will present the concert, which is produced by Live Nation.
The show’s “Khalid & Friends” billing suggests other prominent musicians will perform. The concert takes its title from an El Paso nickname; Khalid also named his 2018 EP Suncity.
“Khalid’s generous offer to put on a benefit concert is a touching example of the spirit of caring and kindness that typifies El Paso,” incoming University of Texas at El Paso president Dr. Heather Wilson said in a statement. “We will come together to help and to heal. I invite you to join us at the concert to honor and support the victims and their families.”
The announcement comes eight days after Khalid posted that a benefit concert was in the works. “Hearing/seeing an act of terrorism happen so close to home, my family, and my friends has been unbelievable and shocking,” he tweeted. “Over the past few days, I’ve been thinking of ways to help out and support the city. I’m planning for a benefit concert later this month, all of the proceeds will go to the families affected by the shooting.”
The announcement comes as Khalid, who appeared on Pollstar‘s cover in April, continues his first arena headlining tour. The “A Night For Suncity” benefit concert will occur during the gap between the tour’s U.S. leg, which concludes Aug. 17 in Miami, and its European leg, which begins in Hamburg, Germany on Sept. 9.
Tickets for the “A Night For Suncity” benefit go on sale on Aug. 14 at 10 a.m. local time. Additionally, donations can be made directly through The Great Khalid Foundation or by buying a commemorative shirt from Khalid’s online store.
