Tours
Billy Joel

“Right place at the right time,” is how Max Loubiere explains how he became a tour manager, which led him to becoming Billy Joel’s tour manager for 30 years. This after working his way up as a rigger on the New Barbarians’ (the all-star band founded by The Rolling Stones’ Ron Wood) 1979 tour and the TM for Boston’s 1987 run.

The person who may know him best helps explain the qualities that have brought him road success: “My wife says I’m a control freak so that must help,” he says. “I’m organized and a multitasker, good at thinking on my feet and communicating.”

While he politely declines to tell his best road story (“There are a lot of stories and experiences that might not be printable these days!”), Loubiere says his best experiences were shows for the USO. “We cooked an Italian feast for the guys at the Subic Bay Naval Base. We played the Waldbühne the night the Berlin Wall came down. We were in Osaka, Japan, the night of the Kobe earthquake.” And, of course he’s incredibly “grateful” to be a part of the team, which he calls “family,” behind Joel’s historic MSG residency, which he says is “the greatest live show today.”
