Pollstar Live! Preview: Bill Werde, On Live 2030: The Cultural Technological and Biological Impact on the Concerts of the Future

Bill Werde
– Bill Werde

Bill Werde knows a thing or two about the music industry. He at one time worked as editorial director for Billboard magazine and more recently has been a consultant for PEN America, PBS’ “Landmarks Live” series, Andy Grammar and Oak View Group (Pollstar’s parent company).

Now he works as the Director of the Bandier Program, Syracuse University’s program that prepares students for lasting careers in the recording and entertainment industries.

On Wednesday, Feb. 5  in the International Ballroom at the Beverly Hilton, Werde and his co-panelists (Eddie Clemens, UTA; Mike Einziger, MixHalo, Incubus; Ben Samuels, Melody VR, Kelly Strickland, Live Nation;) will analyze where the live music industry will be 10 years from now in a discussion moderated by Dan Berkowitz, CEO & Founder, CID Entertainment.
1)    What key issues do you think will be discussed at your panel?

It’s important to discuss who and what represents the future of touring. But I also think the “where” is crucial. Emerging markets are coming online and evolving at light speed.
2)    What new trends are you seeing in your corner of the industry either as it relates to your panel or otherwise?
Not a new trend per se, but everyone I speak with in touring continues to pursue new and ever-better data and analytics.
3)    If a kerfuffle were to break out between panelists and/or audience member what might the issue be over?

Whether it’s acceptable for you and your act to take the giant check to play in Saudi Arabia.
4) What are you looking most forward to at this year’s conference?

The wild bull ride that will be Nicki Minaj & Irving Azoff on stage.
5)    What was your favorite live performance of the last few years?

Maggie Rogers playing Brian Louck’s Living Room Session during Grammy Week of last year. Or when Clairo came back to Syracuse this year and played the Westcott Theater for all of her old Bandier Program and Syracuse University friends. Anyone at either show felt very lucky to be there.
