Tyler, The Creator, Strokes, Flume for Splendour In The Grass 20th
– Splendour In The Grass
One of Australia’s biggest festivals, Splendour In The Grass in Byron Bay, unveiled Tyler, The Creator, The Strokes and Flume as headliners when it celebrates its 20th anniversary between July 24-26.
The festival’s official capacity is 42,500 but Secret Sounds Group co-CEO Jessica Ducrou told Pollstar that the festival has applied to increase that to 50,000 for this year.
“After a 13 year battle, we got permission to permanently stage at the North Byron Parklands,” she added.
“So having the security of our future has given us so much scope.”
Most on the bill are repeat acts. These include Australian producer and DJ Flume, who appears exclusively, and who first played Splendour in 2012. His global rise was so rapid that within four years he was headlining, this time bringing on emerging acts as Remil, Vera Blue, Ngaiire, Kučka, Baro and Jess Kent to give them a chance to shine before their largest audience yet.
The Strokes’ last Australian show was at Splendour in 2016. Yeah Yeah Yeahs tread the festival’s boards in 2006 although they returned for Big Day Out in 2013.
Two major acts making their Splendour debut – Tyler The Creator and Midnight Oil – were enlisted for how their radical political ideas paralleled that of the festival’s. Midnight Oil’s appearance will be as part of The Makarrata Project in which they collaborated with First Nation acts on eight tracks, with proceeds going to indigenous charities.
Other international names include the USA’s PUP, King Princess and Denzel Curry, New Zealand’s chart hit act Benee, with the UK represented by Glass Animals, IDLES, Duke Dumont, Mure Masa, Gerry Cinnamon and Georgia.
Australian acts with an international profile included comedic satirist Tim Minchin; EDM act Illy,;singer songwriters Julia Stone, Thelma Plum, Julia Jacklin, Stella Donnelly and G Flip; R&B teen act Ruel; hip hop proponents Sampa The Great, Baker Boy and Mo’Ju; and rock bands Grinspoon, Confidence Man, Violent Sohos, DMAs, Cub Sport and Methyl Ethel.
Attractions include the underground dance party Tipi Forest, the mental well-being Global Village, Splendour Arts, the world music The World Stage, The Comedy Club, The Science Tent, VIP Village, the political discussion The Forum , the family area Little Splendour, and the LGBTQI community’s Rainbow Bar.
The very first Splendour In The Grass was staged to a sold-out crowd of 12,500 people at Belongil Fields, with the 19 acts headlined by Powderfinger, who were managed by Secret Sounds Group co-CEO Paul Piticco and for whom Ducrou was their agent.
