Aussie psych-rockers Tame Impala perform at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound in 2016. The band will headline both weekends of the Spanish festival in 2022.
After two years offline, Primavera Sound will return to Barcelona in 2022 with an expanded two-weekend format in delayed celebration of its 20th anniversary.
First, the basics: The esteemed Spanish festival is now slated for the first two weekends in June – June 2-4 and June 9-11 – when it will be held at its traditional venue of Parc del Fòrum. On the intervening dates, June 5-8, more than 150 concerts will be held throughout Barcelona under the Primavera a la Ciutat moniker and, on June 12, Primavera will conclude with it’s Brunch On The Beach party.
While the lineups for the fest’s two weekends are largely different, they share several headliners as well as some undercard talent. The Strokes, Tyler, the Creator, Tame Impala, Massive Attack and Gorillaz will headline both weekends, while Pavement, The National and Nick & The Bad Seeds will exclusively headline the first weekend and Dua Lipa, Lorde and Yeah Yeah Yeahs will exclusively headline the second.
A third category of headliner – Megan Thee Stallion, Interpol and Beck – will headline one weekend and play a headlining show in Barcelona during Primavera a la Ciutat. Jorja Smith is the only artist currently booked to headline both Primavera weekends as well as a Ciutat show.
Other lineup highlights are numerous. Primavera’s first weekend features indie-rock greats (Dinosaur Jr., Yo La Tengo, Kim Gordon), acclaimed electronic artists (Jamie xx, Caribou, Honey Dijon), contemporary hip-hop (Brockhampton, Earl Sweatshirt) and country (Kacey Musgraves). Primavera’s second weekend is similarly eclectic, but with an almost completely different lineup: M.I.A., Run The Jewels, Burna Boy, Brittany Howard, Courtney Barnett, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Khruangbin, Sky Ferreira, Playboi Carti, Slowdive and many more.
Brunch on the Beach, meanwhile, will be headlined by Amalie Lens, Nina Kraviz and Peggy Gou, and feature sets by several other electronic artists.
Primavera Pro, a conference for industry professionals, will also return in 2022.
With its 2022 lineup, Primavera has carried over several of the artists who were booked for its 2020 and 2021 editions, both ultimately postponed, including The Strokes, Tyler, The Creator, Beck, Pavement, Massive Attack, The National and Disclosure.
Those who purchased tickets for Primavera 2020 or 2021 will be able to transfer their tickets to 2022, selecting which of two weekends they prefer or upgrading to a ticket offering admittance to both weekends. Those with tickets to one weekend will have access to Primavera a la Ciutat shows, while those with tickets to both weekends will have priority access to the Ciutat concerts.
Refunds for those who purchased 2020 or 2021 tickets will be available beginning June 1, the same day weekend passes go onsale. In the interim, prior ticket buyers will be able to upgrade their tickets from previous years.
If not for the pandemic, Primavera Sound would have celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2020.
“There are two premises that have marked Primavera Sound,” festival co-director Albert Guijarro told Pollstar in February 2020. “One is being an urban festival located in a friendly, attractive city, with good weather and with an attractive cultural and gastronomic offer that makes Barcelona the ideal place to combine hours of music at the festival and time to enjoy the city. The second and most important reason is its musical programming that has always been done rigorously and passionately, evermore committed to musical diversity, taking on board new trends without forgetting the long-standing cult artists who have been and are iconic. “
