After being forced to cancel in 2020, DEAG promoted the Potsdam Palace Night at the famous Sanssouci Palace Park in Brandenburg, Germany, Aug. 20-21 – under a strict hygiene protocol and halved capacity.

9,000 attended on Friday night, witnessing literary entertainment provided by German star actors Benjamin Sadler, Esther Schweins and Benno Fu¨rmann. Saturday was sold-out with 12,500 guests paying to see actors Dietmar Bär, Andrea Sawatzki and Christian Berkel. In addition to the readings, highlights included a fire and light show, various art presentations, musical performances, and hands-on activities for children.
Guests had to show either proof of vaccination, a negative test or proof of recovery at the gate, and install the German government’s Corona-Warn-App. More than 20,000 visitors over one weekend is a huge leap forward for Germany’s live entertainment business, which is one of the slowest to reopen on mainland Europe.
DEAG CEO Prof. Peter Schwenkow said, that “despite difficult conditions,” guests “were rewarded: at last, fun walks and good humor, the most beautiful entertainment and the best pleasure with culinary highlights. We would like to sincerely thank everyone who was there and look forward to all those who want to come next year.”
A concert promoter at its core, DEAG has long been promoting an eclectic variety event formats. Schwenkow talked about his eye for live entertainment genres outside of music that sell tickets in a Pollstar interview on his company’s 40th anniversary: “Maybe, when DEAG turns 50, we’ll only be earning around one-third of our revenues through concerts, another third via other live entertainment formats involving artists, and the last third in areas such as VR, e-sports and others. The types of events we’re selling tickets for aren’t determined by us, but by the market, which is the entirety of customers.”
