One Night In Space
Afrobeat star Burna Boy is to become the first Nigerian artist to headline Madison Square Garden, with an April 28 gig titled “One Night In Space” coming after the artist’s Hollywood Bowl and O2 London sellouts this summer.
Presale for “One Night In Space” starts Wednesday, Dec. 15, with public onsale Friday, Dec. 17.
With “One Night In Space,” the current Grammy nominee follows up a big year that included an Oct. 8 headline date at The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, major festival plays at 2021 Global Citizen Festival and Governors Ball, along with shows at London’s O2 Arena, Paris’ AccorHotels Arena, Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome and more as part of his “2021 Space Drift” tour.
The shows are a triumph for both the exploding Afrobeat market as well as for Burna Boy promoter Duke Concept, who is co-producing the MSG show with Live Nation.
“That was a special one. It is a big accomplishment,” says Osita “Duke” Ugeh, the Nigerian-born, New York-based founder of concert promoter Duke Concept, of the Hollywood Bowl show in October. “This is the first of its kind so I’m happy to have been the first to do it.” Duke told Pollstar at the time that he was planning five arena shows in the U.S and up to 20 tours for 2022.
The company had a busy touring year in 2021, with fellow Afrobeat stars on the road including WizKid, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Omah Lay and still others, with Duke Concept handling production and logistics, which is no small feat when working with artists based in another continent.
“It takes a lot for you to want to do that, the amount of money to spend on logistics, stage props and everything,” he says, of bringing Nigerian talent to the U.S. However, he saw an opening and knew there was an audience.
“I was not satisfied by the quality that was being presented. So I said to myself, there’s a lot to do here and there’s something that needs to be done.”
Burna Boy is represented by UTA.
