Another Planet Entertainment announces partnership with the Castro Theatre
Bay Area-based promotion company Another Planet Entertainment announced a new partnership Wednesday with Bay Properties, Inc., the owners of San Francisco landmark The Castro Theatre. Under the new partnership, APE will help to revamp the venue by improving sound, lighting, production, HVAC and the theater’s marquee, as well as other restorations as needed.
“The Castro Theatre is a wonderful building that we will upgrade for more use in the future,” said Another Planet Entertainment CEO and co-founder Gregg Perloff in a statement. “We want to activate and re-energize the building, making improvements to the customer and artist experience, including dressing room upgrades, restoring the marquee and blade and expanding food and beverage service. We want to present all sorts of programming in the theater – comedy, music, film, community and private events and more. We look forward to further contributing to the culture and economy of this vibrant neighborhood.”
The Castro Theatre was designated as a San Francisco landmark in 1976, with the building’s interior featuring Spanish, Oriental, Italian and Art Deco influences. San Francisco’s Castro District is also a historic part of the city, serving as the heart of its LGTBQ+ community. Bay Properties Inc. has owned the 1,400 capacity venue since it was built in 1922, with The Castro Theatre staying in the family for 100 years.
“After operating the Castro Theatre for nearly a hundred years, we have chosen to partner with Another Planet Entertainment for the next evolution of our historic theatre,” Chris Nasser Padian, Bay Properties vice president, said in a statement. “Another Planet is an ideal partner, as they have a rich history with the City and in rehabilitating historic venues. Bay Properties is excited that the partnership with APE will continue the legacy of the Castro Theatre and the Castro neighborhood.”
APE also serves as the exclusive promoter for the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, Calif., the Fox Theater in Oakland, Calif., the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys, Oxbow RiverStage in Napa, Calif. and Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and The Independent in San Francisco. The Fox Theater can host 2,800 while Bill Graham can hold up to 8,500 people.
In 2019, APE ranked at No. 15 in Pollstar‘s Promoter’s Chart, selling more than 1.4 million tickets and grossing more than $117 million.
