Heavy metal titans Metallica have announced what they are saying will be their only two summer stadium shows in 2022: Highmark Stadium in Buffalo, N.Y., Aug. 11, and Pittsburgh’s PNC Park Aug. 14.

Both shows will feature special guests Greta Van Fleet and Ice Nine Kills, according to the Live Nation announcement. Metallica previously played at Highmark Stadium on July 25, 1992, and Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Stadium on July 26, 1992.
Metallica presale tickets will be available Monday, Feb. 28, to Legacy Fan Club members at 9 a.m. ET and General Fan Club members at 11 a.m. ET.  Presales will end Thursday, March 3, at 10 p.m. ET. General onsale begins Friday, March 4.
While the band says this will be their only “summer stadium shows” in 2022, Metallica does have festival appearances booked including BottleRock Napa Valley, Boston Calling, European festivals including Copenhell, Pinkpop, Rock Werchter and more, after playing 2021 festivals including Danny Wimmer Presents’ Aftershock (California), Louder Than Life (Kentucky) and Welcome To Rockville (Florida).
Although COVID may have muddied up the schedule, the band in recent years has become known for touring in two-week stints and cycling from year to year (and continent to continent) between arenas, stadiums and festivals.
“You can sort of rotate between playing indoors, arena-level shows, stadium shows and then you can play festivals so we quite comfortably rotate between those different experiences,” drummer Lars Ulrich told Pollstar for a 2019 cover story, adding that it keeps fans as well as the band excited and prevents burnout.
