The world’s largest solar car port, realized by Lowlands Festival promoter Mojo Concerts, and energy company Solarfields, will open May 3 on the car park of Lowlands in Biddinghuizen, Netherlands.

The solar carport covers an area of 35 hectares. Its 90,000 solar panels produce an annual capacity of 35 MWp (megawatts-peak) of electricity, which means that approximately 10,000 households can be supplied with green energy, according to Mojo’s announcement of the opening, which adds: “This is equivalent to the power consumption of roughly 100 Lowlands weekends.”

Mojo will hold a launch event on May 3, the day designated by the late U.S. president Jimmy Carter as Sun Day, a day dedicated to all things solar power.

The event will be moderated by Paul van Liempt, and feature conversations about topics concerning the energy transition, including the need for grid flexibility and legislation regarding sustainable solutions.

Confirmed speakers include with Marjan Minnesma (director Urgenda), Tim Verbruggen (innovator smart grids), Wouter Persoon (director EQUANS, Smart Grid Flevoland), and Jelmer Pijlman (director Solarfields).

There will also be live performances, the first to be confirmed by Dominee Gremdaat, the alter ego of Dutch TV personality Paul Haenen. The full program will be announced at a later date.
