Deadheads rejoice! Dead & Company today announced they are returning to Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula Jan. 14-17 for the 2023 edition of their “Playing In The Sand” concert vacation experience at the Moon Palace, Cancún.
All-inclusive packages go on sale to the public on Friday, Aug. 19 at 1 PM ET at www.playinginthesand.com. Previous “Playing in the Sand” attendees have access to an alumni pre-sale, which begins Thursday, Aug 18 at 1 PM ET.
Formed in 2015, Dead & Co. continue the Grateful Dead’s historic live legacy and includes the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, and Bob Weir as well as musician John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The band’s set-lists, which are widely known to include rarities and oldies, included some 115 songs performed during the summer tour, six of which made their debut.
Dead & Co not only continue the Grateful Dead’s music legacy, but also their legacy of touring successes. Produced by Playa Luna Presents, Playing in the Sand, follows Dead & Company’s 2022 tour, which sold some 400,000 tickets and grossed $46 million, According to Pollstar Boxoffice reports dating back to 2015, the band grossed $324.9 million dollars over the course of 183 shows with an average of 23.4K tickets sold and an average gross of $2.3 million. In 2021, a pandemic-marred touring year, the band still placed fifth on Pollstar’s Year End World Wide Tours chart grossing $50.2 million and selling 588K tickets.
This year’s event continues Dead & Co’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and combating climate change in partnership with Moon Palace, who has been designated as a low-carbon tourism provider. In addition to a single-use plastic-free concert area, all waste discarded throughout the resort will be sorted during the event and diverted from landfill.
Dead & Company also had their most successful Participation Row, a non-profit village celebrating 50 years of Grateful Dead philanthropy, raising nearly $1 million for HeadCount, REVERB and the Dead Family NPOs. Through this series of partnerships pulled together and managed by Activist, Dead & Company continues their commitment to reduce the tour’s environmental footprint and to engage fans to take action for people and the planet.
