Willie Nelson Announces Two 90th Birthday Shows At Hollywood Bowl
What do Snoop, Ziggy Marley, Miranda Lambert, Neil Young, Tom Jones, Bob Weir, Orville Peck, Lyle Lovett, Allison Russell, Warren Haynes, the Chicks, Billy Strings, the Lumineers, Kacey Musgraves, Beckl Sturgill Simpson, Leon Bridges, and Rosanne Cash all have in common?
When you’re an American icon like Willie Nelson, it takes not one, but two birthday parties to properly celebrate your 90th birthday. And for the original Outlaw and Highwayman, Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30 are being set aside for some of the best artists across multiple genres and generations to do justice to the legend who sings about “making music with my friends…”
Who other than Willie Nelson could bring Snoop Dogg, Ziggy Marley, Miranda Lambert, Neil Young, Tom Jones, Bobby Weir, Orville Peck, Lyle Lovett, Allison Russell, Warren Haynes, the Chicks, Billy Strings, the Lumineers, Kacey Musgraves, Particle Kid, Sturgill Simpson, Leon Bridges, Rosanne Cash and so many more together for two very singular nights at the Hollywood Bowl? Reggae, hip hop, roots country, mainstream country, Texas, jazz, crunchy rock, swingers’ music and beyond, it’s all Willie when you get down to it.
“I can’t think of a better way to spend my 90th birthday than being surrounded by family, friends and of course the fans who made this all possible,” Nelson says in a release for Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90, A Star-Studded Concert to Celebrate Willie Nelson’s 90th Birthday. “It’s an honor to perform with such an incredible group of artists at such an iconic venue.”
Nelson, whose written seminal American songbook classics including “Crazy,” “Hello Walls” and “Family Bible” before landing his own artist momentum, has defined the best of what country music – and beyond – could be for the last seventy years. A founder of Farm Aid, the charity devoted to keeping family farmers on the land, and advocate for legalizing marijuana, including the introduction of Willie’s Reserve, the man who rose to prominence on his mythic Fourth of July Picnics in Dripping Springs, Texas embodies the essence of the freewheeling musician even as he’s created albums that speak to the tenderness, integrity and good times that characterize the best of who we are.
A jazz-influenced guitarist, known for Trigger, his well-worn acoustic guitar, Nelson’s starred in films, written a series of memoirs and is the subject of a five-part documentary on his life and career, which debuts at 2023’s Sundance Film Festival. With four nominations at this year’s Grammys, he will release his 72nd album, This Beautiful Time, a tribute to the late Harlan Howard, on April 29.
Music defines him, and so music shall deliver what will no doubt be the party of the year!
Blackbird Presents and Live Nation Hewitt-Silva are the forces behind the event executive produced by longtime manager Mark Rothbaum, Blackbird’s Keith Wortman, Bill Silva, Brian Smith and Creative Artists Agency.
