Elton John’s won countless awards across his storied career and now he’s hit on the combination to join one of the most exclusive clubs in entertainment: the EGOTs.

The initialism stands for Emmy-Grammy-Oscar-Tony and John is the 19th person to win at least one trophy from each of the major awards shows in a competitive category after Monday’s Emmy win for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium.”

John started his EGOT journey relatively late in his career, winning his first Grammy in 1987 for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group (with Vocal) for his superstar collaboration “That’s What Friends Are For” with Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder. He added an Oscar in 1995 for Best Original Song for “Can You Feel The Love Tonight?” from “The Lion King” (for which he also won a Best Pop Performance Grammy). His Tony came in 2000 for Best Original Score for “Aida.”

All told, Elton’s won five Grammys, two Oscars and one each of Tonys and Emmys.

The first EGOT was composer Richard Rodgers, who completed his collection in 1962. Other musical artists in the group include John Legend and Jennifer Hudson. Five other people — including Harry Belafonte and Barbra Streisand — can be considered EGOTs if honorary awards are included.
