Hawk – who turned pro at just 14 and by 16 was widely considered the best skateboarder on earth – is known as the first skateboarder to ever complete a 900. Along with his billion-dollar video game franchise, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, his empire includes Birdhouse Skateboards, Hawk Clothing, and the Tony Hawk Signature Series products, as well as his production company, 900 Films. He also founded The Skatepark Project, which helps underserved communities create safe and inclusive skateparks for youth.

Rodney is referred to as the Godfather of street skating for inventing most of the tricks of the modern era. Today’s news points out that Rodney is “the most dominant world champion in the history of the sport, defending his title 35 of 36 times.” Along with being huge in the skateboarding world, he’s also big in science for his work “finding parallels between skate and hacker cultures that foster innovation.” His accomplishments include collaborating on multiple scientific papers along with being “appointed as a Director’s Fellow at MIT Media Lab in 2019, then a Distinguished Research Scholar at the Smithsonian in 2020, and recently a Collaborator in the Department of Complex Pain & Addictions Services at Vancouver General Hospital.”
