The weekend after Outside Lands, Another Planet Entertainment plans to keep the good times rolling with a new, one-night-only event with the first ticketed concert in Golden Gate Park after dark featuring System of a Down and Deftones. The show takes place on Aug. 17, the weekend after the promotion company’s acclaimed festival.

While the majority of Outside Lands’ stage builds will be taken down prior to the concert, the main stage on Polo Fields will remain. Along with System of a Down and Deftones, other artists performing include Mars Volta, Viagra Boys and Vows. The show begins at 3 p.m. and lasts until 10 p.m.

“We first approached the city five years ago asking if we could leave the main stage up and do a standalone concert or concerts,” Allen Scott, President of Concerts and Festivals at Another Planet Entertainment, tells Pollstar. “At the time, it got moderate interest from the city. And then a couple years ago, the summer of ’22 Outside Lands, I was giving a tour around the festival before we opened doors to the Mayor of San Francisco. And she said, ‘It’d be great to do a second weekend of outside Lands.’ And I said, ‘It’s probably a little bit of a stretch in terms of the demand for tickets to do two weekends. But, we would love to do a concert or concerts out there the following weekend.’ And that was the beginning of the ball really beginning to roll. Then, late last spring, the park said, ‘You know what? We think we can make this happen.’ And we started the due process with the city and neighborhood, and we were approved this past September to do anywhere up to three concerts the weekend following Outside Lands. And this is the first one we’re announcing.”

Scott says he expects 80% of fans coming to the show to be outside of San Francisco, and 50% to come in from outside of the Bay Area. He believes the show will be a major economic driver for the city.

“We wanted to host something that is unique and rare,” Scott says. “Not just an artist that’s on tour and it’s another stop for them. System of a Down is very particular in what concerts they do and how many they do. Deftones, who are from Northern California, are bigger than they’ve ever been in the history of the band. It felt like really good timing to put those two together, and then add a few bands to play prior to them. With Mars Volta, Viagra Boys and Vows, it was a perfect way to round this bill out. We wanted to put together a lineup that was not only unique but culturally relevant.”

Scott and Another Planet Entertainment plan to continue the show next year, with a few artists already in mind.

“We have a number of artists who are holding next year for this weekend,” Scott says.

Since the ’60s, Golden Gate Park’s Polo Fields has hosted numerous artists playing in the park, including Grateful Dead, Pearl Jam, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Neil Young for daytime concerts.

Tickets go on sale starting April 12 at 10 a.m. PT. Artist resales begin on April 10 at 10 a.m. PT, with Another Planet Entertainment’s presale taking place on April 11 at 10 a.m. PT. Ticket prices range from $169 to $399.
