The Smile Cancel European Tour Due To Illness
The Smile were forced to cancel eight dates in Europe, scheduled for August, due to band member Jonny Greenwood falling ill.
While Greenwood is out of danger, doctors advised the band to cancel all imminent touring plans, which affects a total of eight dates scheduled on the European continent between Aug. 13 and Aug. 28, which would have taken The Smile through Latvia, Poland, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France, and Spain.
The Smile released a new album, Wall Of Eyes, Jan. 26, 2024 on XL Recordings, and has been touring the UK and Ireland in March.
Show highlights from the UK leg of the tour, reported to the Pollstar Boxoffice, include a sold out Eventim Apollo in London, where the band moved 5,068 tickets at a $358,404 gross, March 10; as well as the closing show of the UK leg, March 23, at London’s Alexandra Palace, selling all available 9,900 tickets for a $686,124 gross.
The SJM promoted UK leg also included sold-out shows at the O2 Academy Birmingham, March 22 (2,963 tickets; $185,429 gross); the SEC Armadillo, March 20 (2,848, $195,706); and The Brighton Centre in Brighton, March 18 (3,907, $246,137). The Ireland show at 3Arena in Dublin, promoted by MCD Productions, sold 8,533 tickets at a $556,847 gross.
The Smile wanted to hit the road on the European mainland in August, following a string of festival gigs this summer, but those plans have been put on hold.
The full band statement reads:
“A few days ago, Jonny became seriously ill from an infection that needed emergency hospital treatment, some of it in intensive care. Mercifully he is now out of danger and will soon return home.
“We have been instructed by the medical team in charge of Jonny’s care to cancel all engagements until he has had time to make a full recovery. To that end, The Smile tour of Europe in August is cancelled.
“Refunds for headline shows will be available from your ticket provider (…). We all wish Jonny a speedy recovery.”
The Smile are represented by 13 Artists on the agency side, and ATC Management. Further details are available to Pollstar subscribers here.
