Angie Warner’s live career began humbly: working as a runner for tours in the Carolinas in the late ’90s and thumbing the pages of Pollstar while in college (“It was my Bible!” she says). In 2000, she took a spot as a production assistant for NSYNC’s “No Strings Attached Tour” and then, it was off to the races.

In the more than two decades since, she’s tour managed for some of music’s biggest acts: Guns N’ Roses, Jay-Z, Imagine Dragons and for the last five years, Post Malone.

She’s seen some changes and she’s pushing for even more.

“When I started touring 25 years ago, we came into the world as women with thick skins – needing to be a bit quieter in order to learn and rarely in leadership roles,” she tells Pollstar.

“The new generation needs to know that we support them and we want to be able to harness their potential for the benefit of the entire team. That they hav ean important voice in this industry and no one should ever make them feel diminished or less than. Women now are filling every role on tour and it would be great to continue to see the numbers grow.  We are as good as males — most of the time better! — in every aspect of touring.”

From her mentors — she lists among them Janine Edwards, Florence Tse, Allison Larkin, Janine Orsi, Lori Tierney and Shelley Lazar — she learned that tour managing is often more art than science, a lesson she passes on.

“So much of this industry is on-the-job training. The best way to learn and to be great at what you do at the top, is to do as many jobs as you can underneath,” she says. “You need to take that time to meet everyone and nurture those relationships so when you’re running tours, you have all the right people on your team and answering your emergency calls at 3 a.m. Never forget that everyone working on a tour is just as important as the next. Treat everyone the same: with full respect.”

Warner took a few months off this year — she recommends it for everyone — but will be helming the tour for BTS’ J Hope.
