While Billie Eilish has brought sustainability messaging to a global audience, her entire ethos would be nothing without her mother, Maggie Baird. Having long had a passion for sustainability (Baird inspired Eilish to adopt a vegan lifestyle), Baird began her nonprofit Support+Feed to help venues and tours be more sustainable by offering plant-based options at venues.
Baird hasnโ€™t eaten meat since 1976, becoming an early adopter of a plant-based diet. She purchased the book โ€œDiet for a Small Planet,โ€ which discusses the connection between animal agriculture and the environment, and how it can lead to climate change. In the early days of the pandemic, she began Support+Feed to contribute a solution to the climate crisis.

โ€œOn the road with Billie, we worked with local community organizations to provide plant-based meals, had tables in Reverbโ€™s Eco Action Village, meeting fans and encouraging them to take the Support+Feed pledge to eat at least one plant-based meal a day for 30 days to actively address the climate crisis on a personal level,โ€ she says. โ€œWe hosted plant-based food drives at many of Billieโ€™s shows, provided information to fans and crew about the climate impact of what we eat and produced Overheated, which is a one-day climate event for Billieโ€™s fans.โ€

Baird continues to inspire her daughter and others in the music industry to seek out a better world. Despite constant negativity regarding the state of climate change and the result of the U.S. presidential election, Baird finds hope.

โ€œI was especially moved by Billieโ€™s show in Nashville the day after the 2024 presidential election,โ€ Baird says. โ€œWe had just hosted the Overheated event a few days before in Atlanta, which had been inspiring and profound, but this was a painful day for much of the audience and for all of our family, and being at that show in her presence, and seeing the comfort and empowerment that she provided to her audience was extremely moving. We found ourselves in a room with fellow music fans, sharing a powerful experience for which I will forever be grateful. Billie was just what we needed that night.โ€
