WWE Acquiring Mexican Lucha Libre Promotion AAA

TKO continues to expand its global footprint, as its flagship wrestling promotion WWE announced it is acquiring respected Mexican lucha libre promotion AAA.
The announcement of the pending purchase came from WWE’s Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque ahead of the first night of WWE’s flagship event Wrestlemania, held over two days this weekend at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium.
The acquisition will be made in partnership with Fillip, a Mexico-based sports and entertainment company. AAA was founded as a breakaway from long-running lucha libre promotion CMLL in 1992 by Antonio Peña, a promoter seeking more creative freedom. It has been owned and operated by the Peña family during its entire run. Antonio Peña’s sister Marisela is the promotion’s current president and her son Dorian Roldán Peña its general manager. The Peñas will continue to be involved after the acquisition.
Lucha libre is a distinct style of professional wrestling that often features masked wrestlers using a more fast-paced and high-flying style than the American style. AAA gave starts to future WWE talent, including Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio and Penta. Its 1994 event “When Worlds Collide” at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena is recognized as introducing Guerrero and Mysterio, along with Konnan, Psicosis and Juventud Guerrero, to American audiences. In a nod to that event, WWE’s developmental promotion NXT and AAA will hold a joint show — “Worlds Collide” — at the Kia Forum June 7 before the WWE event “Money In The Bank,” set for the same day at the Intuit Dome.
“AAA has a rich cultural heritage with some of the most passionate fans in the world and it’s an honor to work with the Peña family to embark on this journey,” said Levesque in a statement. “By bringing together WWE’s global capabilities and AAA’s amazing tradition, we look forward to an exciting future filled with new opportunities.”
In a statement in Spanish posted to social media, AAA said it is committed to preserving and expanding the Peña family legacy.
“With great emotion and respect to our roots, we announce a strategic alliance with WWE, the giant and global leader of wrestling, and Fillip, the Mexican company that specializes in revitalizing iconic sports and entertainment properties, and together they will promote Mexican lucha libre at regional and global level, marking the beginning of a new era for AAA,” it said. “This alliance isn’t a farewell to who we are—it’s a promise to take our essence to new audiences, to strengthen our structure, to open more doors for our luchadores and to demonstrate that Mexican lucha libre has a place on the global stage.”
The transaction is subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions and is expected to close in Q3 2025.
Shares of TKO were down about 3% in Monday morning trading.
